Another draw for Stevenage

Boro and Crewe (who had to use our away kit; isn’t it great being in the ‘big time’?) played out a fairly dull draw, with the referee providing most of the talking points. A slow first half only came to life in the last minute, when Yemi put Stevenage ahead. Up to that point, the game had the feel of a pre-season friendly. Even the relatively big crowd(over 3000, including 400 Crewe fans) were subdued throughout.

Crewe improved from awful to poor in the 2nd half and it was enough to earn a point against an equally shoddy Stevenage. In the 56th minute, Bostwick unusually lost possession on the halfway line and Crewe broke quickly, with Ashley Westwood curling a great shot just inside Daisy’s post to equalise. Shortly after, Stacy Long received a dubious second yellow card after challenging for 50/50 ball.

With Boro down to ten men, Crewe tried to make it a level playing field with an assualt from Miller on Laird looking likely to make it ten a side. But the ref saw it differently to the (notoriously impartial) East Terrace and only showed a yellow card. Miller was swiftly subbed by Crewe whilst the ref tried to up the card count before full time.

Both sides had chances to win, more to the away side than for us, but in the circumstances, a draw will do. After all, Crewe did beat Barnet 7-0 a couple of weeks ago…
