Manager Teddy Sheringham was pleased with both the draw against Luton Town at the weekend and the return of three points from the Bristol Rovers clash last night.

Luton Highlights

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference following the point against Luton, Sheringham said he felt it was a fair result on the day and quite an interesting game where either side could have won it in the end.

He was also pleased to have seen the side pick up a second clean sheet in three games.

‘It was a game that I felt we could attack, get on the front-foot and take all three points today. As it worked out it was a very even, scrappy game. We knew it would be, there were chances at both ends and at the end of the day, a point is a fair result from my point of view. It was tough to keep them quiet today, they had a couple of little spells in the game when they came alive and it was pleasing to keep a clean sheet.’

With new loan signing Jamille Matt coming on in the second half, Sheringham was pleased with his contribution.

‘They have not worked together very much, he came in on Thursday/Friday and I thought he looked quite lively. It is tough coming into a game like that but sometimes it suits players to come in and have half an hour after only training a couple of days with your teammates, it is sometimes better than going straight into the starting line-up.’

With Rovers up next in midweek, he said ahead of the tie.

‘They come thick and fast – Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. We have got a few injuries but we have got a big squad that I really like at the moment. We have got a lot of boys eager to show how good they are and we will go down to Bristol with a positive attitude and hopefully we will get a result.’

L2 – Bristol Rovers 1-2 Stevenage

With winning goals coming from Steven Schumacher and Chris Whelpdale in the game, Sheringham was delighted with the return of three points last night.

‘It has been a long time coming, but it is very pleasing now it is here. I felt we started the game very well, got on the front-foot again and deserved to be in front. Maybe we could have been even more in front after 20 minutes, I felt we started really well in that period. Then they took over and put us under a lot of pressure for 25 minutes at the end of the first half. We gathered our composure and felt we did well in the second half and it was another cracking goal from Whelps. I felt that we deserved the three points.’

With Matt making his first start in the game, he came in for praise as did Tom Pett.

‘Gnanduillet has come in and given us a presence up there but he has played a lot of games since he has come in which he hasn`t been used to. So we changed it, put Jamille up there and I thought he was excellent with a large helping hand from little Petty. I thought he was fantastic as well and when your front two get hold of the ball you have got a chance of doing well in football matches and that`s exactly what they did today.’

The one sour note from the game was Schumacher being stretchered off in the second half with what looked like a serious knee injury.

‘Big blow for us. I thought he was very good again tonight; he is captain material for us. The last six weeks he has shown how good a player he is and what stature he has on the football pitch. He will be a massive miss for us; he has been really coming into his own recently, scoring goals as well, valuable goals.’
